Hendrik Zimmer | Exhibition : Hendrik Zimmer & Starsky Brines. In Dialogue

HENDRIK ZIMMER

While Hendrik Zimmer's works have so far emphasized the painterly ductus and experimented with various techniques, in his latest series he focuses on the woodcut technique, an old pictorial process that he reinterprets. Forced outline drawings, stylization of the surface, the tendency towards closed color areas and strict geometrization are inherent in this technique, which Zimmer integrates quite purposefully into his clear, powerful paintings. In doing so, he experiments with different color densities, color intensities, and structures, thus continuing the play characteristic of his earlier works, which oscillates between two- and three-dimensionality, between pictorial surface and pictorial depth.

Zimmer develops his visual language by bringing together forms and objects from different contexts. From this he develops his own pictorial worlds, which do not 'depict' anything, but are something entirely their own. They emerge from Zimmer's 'fascination with the world and its people, its beauty and its abysses,' hinting at familiar things, but allowing the viewer to fill the resulting spaces with his own observations, his own experiences, and his own experiences. Zimmer's work is about 'the truthfulness of the seeker, about process and change.' This is evident not only in the open legibility of his paintings, but also through the visibility of his working processes. The making, the artistic process, the change of the image, but also its perception, all this is Zimmer's artistic driving force.

His new works once again underscore Zimmer's love of posters, book illustrations, any printed work. Whereas he previously used printed works as material or as models for content, he now turns to the technique of wood printing, the oldest method of reproducing images. In doing so, Zimmer, like the artists of the European avant-garde of the 20th century, takes up the technique of the great Japanese woodblock printmakers, who had been producing multicolored prints since the 10th century. This allows him to play with a variety of colors, sometimes bright, sometimes saturated. The use of somewhat coarser canvases, experimenting with paper as an additional support, also opens up to Zimmer further wide variations in the use of color. The result is unique pieces that have echoes of works of art from the 1920s and 1960s, but at the same time possess Zimmer's destinctive signature.
